Introduction / History

The Ekllenjuy are a subgroup of the Chorote people of northern Argentina, identified in some sources as Chorote, Eklenjuy or Iyojwa'ja. They live in the northwest of the country, especially in areas where Indigenous communities have long maintained their ancestral ties to land despite political and economic pressures.

Their traditional language is Chorote, Iyojwa'ja, part of the Matacoan language family. Historically, the Ekllenjuy have been shaped by centuries of Indigenous resistance, adapting to shifting borders, national policies, and outside pressures—including disputes over land use and extractive industries that affect many Indigenous groups in northern Argentina.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Daily life among the Eklenjuy reflects the rhythms of Indigenous communities in Argentina's northwest. Many families engage in small-scale agriculture, gathering, fishing, and limited livestock raising. Traditional foods include locally grown crops such as maize, beans, squash, and foraged products from the surrounding environment.

Family life is deeply communal. Extended families often share responsibilities in child-rearing, food preparation, and maintaining the home. Elders are highly valued for preserving stories, language, and customary practices.

The Eklenjuy observe community celebrations tied to seasons, family milestones, and cultural customs. Because their wider region includes many Indigenous communities who continue to face threats to land security, ceremonial gatherings also strengthen unity and identity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Where Christian influence has entered, it coexists alongside traditional practices without fully replacing them. Respect for customary spirituality remains important, even as some individuals express interest in learning more about the message of Jesus Christ and His hope for every people group.

What Are Their Needs?

Stronger access to reliable healthcare, education, and economic opportunity would improve the stability of Eklenjuy families. Maintaining land rights is a critical concern in their region, where outside industries place pressure on Indigenous territories.

Spiritual needs include deeper exposure to the gospel of Jesus Christ in ways that honor their language and cultural identity. Developing discipleship resources in Chorote, Iyojwa'ja would strengthen long-term faith formation. Preservation of their language is also important as younger generations face increasing pressure to assimilate into dominant cultural patterns.

Prayer Items

Pray for open hearts among the Eklenjuy to encounter the mercy and truth of Jesus Christ.
Pray for protection of their land, homes, and families from outside pressures.
Pray that emerging believers among them will be equipped and willing to bring the gospel to groups still lacking a Christian witness.
